Cabernet Sauvignon

Overview

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most famous red wine grapes in the world.
It makes full-bodied wines with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberry, mint, and sometimes cedar or vanilla from oak ageing.
These wines are dry, have firm tannins, and can age for many years.

Where It’s Grown

Cabernet Sauvignon grows almost everywhere wine is made.
The best-known regions are Bordeaux (France), California (USA), Chile, Australia, Argentina (Mendoza), South Africa, and Italy (Tuscany).
Each gives a slightly different style — Bordeaux wines are structured and elegant, while New World wines like those from Napa or Chile are riper and fruitier.

Typical Style

  • Colour: Deep ruby or purple
  • Aromas: Blackcurrant, blackberry, mint, cedar, spice
  • Taste: Full-bodied, firm tannins, medium to high acidity
  • Best served with: Red meat, grilled dishes, or rich sauces

Blends and Rosé

Cabernet is often blended with Merlot or Cabernet Franc (as in Bordeaux) to soften tannins and add roundness.
In some regions, it is blended with Syrah/Shiraz or used to make dry rosé wines that are fruity and refreshing.

It grows well in many climates, is easy to recognise by taste, and is known for producing high-quality, long-lived wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon is often seen as the world’s classic red — powerful, elegant, and dependable.
